College Students Search for
Careers
College
students have so many choices these days that it is no wonder many of the
students in colleges will switch their majors numerous times before they
settle on one chosen career choice. The reason students can’t decide is
because they are often pulled in so many different ways. Their parents have
dreams and goals that they hope their children will fulfill and are usually
not shy about sharing those expectations with their child going away to
college for the first time. Then, the student has dreams and aspirations.
And wouldn’t you know it, but as soon as the student settles on a career
choice, he or she hears about or learns of another new career that they
didn’t know about and it sounds interesting too!
Career
choices are hard to decide on when students first enter college. Parents can
help students learn about different choices but ultimately the decisions
must be the student’s sole decision because the student is the one who will
have to work within the career choice they choose.
Careers in
the medical profession always appeal to parents but how much dedication does
the student have to pursue the education and will he or she finish what they
start within that professional career? If they aren’t truly interested in
the career choice, probably not!
Legal
careers are often appealing also to the college student who wants to find an
impressive career. If the student is excellent in the languages and
government, then the career is probably one to consider. Still, the fact
remains that regardless of what the college student decides to do,
professional careers in law or the medical field do require dedication and
tenacity to be successful.
Career-minded business students will find that the business courses for
freshman and sophomore level classes may be simple and this can often be one
of the reasons that some students will begin to pursue business. However,
understand that even though business courses in college may not be all that
difficult, career and goal-oriented individuals will want to pursue more
than a bachelor’s degree and an MBA is not that simple to achieve. This is
why students pursuing a career in business should truly love the concepts
and foundation of business in general as well as accounting and everything
that may go along with majoring in business.
Columbia
University and Harvard are just some of the universities with competitive
MBA programs but in order to be among the ranks of sought-after business
students, careers begin by being a graduate from one of these fine schools
of business. That’s just the way the business world is. The better jobs are
for the business majors from the much better schools.
Career-minded or not, students need to realize that tuition is very
expensive and parents need to make sure they convey that fact to their kids.
Students need to listen to their parents for advice and most definitely need
a good academic advisor to help them in scheduling classes. Student
advisement through colleges and university centers for
career
counseling can be of great benefit as well.
Careers can
be something that students will look forward to rather than dread if the
student chooses a job or career that sounds interesting to them and if the
career is something that they want to do, and then ultimately the career
will be a good match for the student. Still, encourage the students who are
close to you to search out any and all career options. There are so many out
there today that the student needs to research which bright careers they
find appealing and which ones aren’t for them.
Goal-setting early with college students can be the ticket to a successful
life and an important successful career. Encouraging the student to see
themselves in the throes of their career can certainly help them decide what
they want as well. Discuss incomes of the career with the student and
encourage them to see the bigger picture. For example, careers bring a
certain kind of lifestyle to the people who choose the career. If someone
knows they won’t be happy earning a meager $20,000 a year or $10.00 an hour,
then they need to set their goals higher than becoming a medical
technologist. And if the student is after the big bucks, then they need to
find the careers that will offer them the salaries they desire. |
